Review of Les Misérables (2012) by Steven S — 10 Feb 2014
I should probably start off by saying even though I am not a Les Mis fan and this movie had its problems, but I still enjoyed it as a movie itself mainly because I really like the cast that goes along with it. Most of the singing was nice and all but it kept on constantly doing it with almost every line in this film in fact about 98% of the movie, the main cast (besides Russell Crowe) did a great job with their acting and singing and even though the story did pace itself a bit to much, it still was an interesting story overall.
I am going on ahead with what I liked most about the movie and that is most of the actors. I thought Hugh Jackman did a fantastic job in this movie with emotional performance, singing and the ability to fit perfectly into his character through out the entire. Even though he did not win the Oscar for it and deserved one a long time ago (but might win one eventually) he still proves himself to put on a good show even if the movie is still not as great (besides Movie 43). The beautiful and talented Anne Hathaway gives the performance not only of her entire career (that and Rachel Getting Married being her first Oscar nomination) but the performance of a life time as well. It must have been tough for her because she had to act, sing and cry at the same time especially during her "I Dreamed a Dream" song which she did in one scene. The only down side with her is that I think she needed more screen time in fact I think that she was only on the entire movie for barley 10 minutes (what a rip off) and it does not mean I diss and no not at all, I just believe she deserved more of a spot on the set considering the fact that she is one of the main stars. How ever one of the down sides to the acting is Russell Crowes performance. In general even though I am not a fan of his and at time I do think he does a good job, but just not in this one. He was a lousy singer to begin with in fact can not do it through a paper bad and even his acting in this movie was just a snooze fest all through out the entire movie. And last but least both Actresses who played Cosette (Anne Hathaway's characters daughter) were pretty good as well. To make it short but sweet their acting was not bad, but their singing was pretty good. Overall it was mostly well acted an sung through out the film even it constantly does it.
I also though it had a pretty good story even though it was pacey and slow at parts with its story telling. The story is about a man named Jean (Hugh Jackman) who is imprisoned because he Stoll bread to feed a family member and for some reason one of the law officers named Javert (Russell Crowe) who keeps an extra eye on him while he is in prison and plays more of a character later on, even though he could keep an extra eye on murders instead for some reason. After Jean is released until his parole comes up he decides to break it and become a free man. a few years later he some how becomes Mayor of a town (yea I know) and in that town Javert travels around looking for Jean the man he met in prison because he skipped his parole years ago. He also learns from him that he captured a look a like of Jean and that he was going to be trialed. Now that left Jean with a difficult choice whether let the man go to jail or take responsibility. To get away from that, a lady named Fantine (Anne Hathaway) looses her job and has go into prostitution in order to send her child money at the place she works. Later Jean comes by and helps Fantine and gets her off the streets and takes care of her but unfortunately she is dying. In her Last request she asks Jean to care for her child for as long as he lives. And so to add on from early he confesses to the crime at court and saves the look alike and takes Fantines daughter out of town and then many years go by were the daughter is now a teen and still under the care of Jean. As usual I don't like to revile much about a movie unless some see's it so to find out whether Jean can escape his past and what will happen next to Fantines daughter next.
The Last thing that I really liked about this movie is are the production sets and environment. I don't know where they exactly filmed but the CGI and scenery they was just perfect because it really seem liked it took place back in France of 1800's to keep it short but sweet.
Overall I though it was good, but could have been better.
