Review of Les Misérables (2012) by Dan F — 22 Aug 2015
It looks magnificent, the songs are classic and the cast are all great singers who emote to hair-raising levels, but character development and plot developments suffer in this medium as time flies by- decades of it- and sometimes it's hard to feel the emotional impact because of that, jumping from one epic chorus to another.
The relentless flow may be its only flaw, but it left me a bit detached. Still, it is a remarkable piece of work- some stage transfers suffer in their poor casting but Tom Hooper's technical masterpiece nails it, as ambitious but perhaps less effective than Cameron Macintosh's stage show.
I'm still not convinced of the justice done to Victor Hugo's Novel though, long eclipsed by musical theatre's flagship enterprise.
