Review of Les Misérables (1998) by I'm El Capitano! A — 20 Jan 2009
While Liam Neeson does a fine job, Uma Thurman provides the best performance out of her fellow cast members in this film based on the literary work of the same name by French novelist Victor Hugo. While the story is told accurately (to my knowledge), the movie lacks some amount of passion which I felt all along should be there as I watched it. Claire Danes comes off, unfortunately, as a frivolous, short-sighted adolescent girl who falls in love at the mere sight of a young revolutionary youth of France, played by Hans Matheson. This plot twist is, sadly, presented in such a way that it seems as terribly cliche as it truly is.
Les Miserables is a good film. The cast is great, overall, and the message communicated by Liam Neeson's character is amazing. However, it falls short in a few key areas and therefore only warrants a four out of five stars, in my opinion.
