Review of Les Misérables (1998) by Nina B — 18 Oct 2010
A decent adaptation with excellent casting (love you, Liam) and production values. Of necessity, the story was heavily abridged, with the most lamentable departure from the book (IMHO) being the reduced role of the Thenardier family.
Other changes were made for dramatic effect, some of which work and some of which seem unnecessary. Though no film version could ever fully capture the mood of Hugo's masterpiece, (with such wonderful digressions as a long and glorious description of the Paris sewers, a 50 page meditation on the Battle of Waterloo, and an eloquent defense of the usage of a certain French curse word), this version does convey the essence of the story.
