Review of Les Misérables (1998) by Tero H — 30 Dec 2012
Here is a list of pluses and minuses for this classic:
+ Great storyline. Very well written novel by Victor Hugo is well translated into film.
+ Storytelling flows seamlessly from beginning to finnish, there are no awkward stops or pauses.
+ Casting. The acting is really great. Neeson, Rush, Danes, Thurman..
+ History is impressively made visible, and wardrobe, sets, all complement to that. Great music also helps this process.
- A bit slow-paced.
- Seems to be slightly repetitive - the same sequence of events : Valjean's atonement, flight, chase and escape seem to be repeated and thats pretty much the set of the movie. All other events just seem to complement that setting, at least until the end of the film when everything in it changes. I've seen the film at least twice before. One of the best historical dramas that I have seen, but a bit slow-paced, possibly due to its duration.
