Review of Les Misérables (1998) by Abel D — 03 Apr 2013
While its ending will have Hugo purists boiling with rage, August's 90s adaptation of the iconic French tale still manages to be a very fine film in its own right, with great performances, especially Rush and Neeson in the two central roles, playing off each other perfectly, solid cinematography and design work that does make you believe you are looking at early 19th century France, and more than a handful of genuinely moving and/or saddening emotional moments that tug at the heart without being sappy or overblown.
