Review of Léon: The Professional (1994) by Matt D — 11 Nov 2013
This is a damn fine thriller in just about every way possible but my two gripes are glaring ones.
1. The Score. Eric Serra's work here as composer does exactly what it did for Goldeneye...nothing. It is extremely dated, on the nose, and sometimes obnoxious. I'd love to see a version of this with another composer taking over. With a better score this could be perfect.
2. I find it extremely hard to believe that Gary Oldman's character is a federal agent. Even as a corrupt one he is waaaaaaaaay too bizarre and out there to actually hold any sort of government position. He's fun to watch but just not believable.
Beyond those two things though this movie is essential. Jean Reno and Natalie Portman are fantastic together and I would love to see them reunite in another project ASAP.
