Review of Léolo (1992) by Hugo F — 20 Mar 2009
Although the films of Lauzon are apparently few and this is the first I have seen, I found it believable while at the same time wondering the truth behind the imaginings of a young boy. It is definitely a warped reality.
Some things seemed so disgusting I wanted to shut my eyes. Other times, I kept my eyes fixed on Leolo as his imagination began to take flight away from his horrible house. The grotesque figure of his father appearing and disappearing, his obese mother destroying a fragment of his dreams without remorse, his brutal grandfather etc.
etc. But the poetry, ahhh yes, that redeems the whole nightmare for brief moments.
