Review of Legends of the Fall (1994) by Sarah L — 21 Aug 2011
3: It's never quite as good as I remember it being, as the concept of the film is a bit more interesting than it actually is on screen. However, I still enjoy it immensely each and every time. The locations are iconic and fantastic.
The story seems relatively fresh and unique, while the period in history it covers has been anything but worn out. I can't help feeling I wanted more though. It seems to be the kind of story that demands a more epic scope; I'm sure Lean could have done it right.
The casting is spot on and the arc poignant. I always associate this with A River Runs Through It in my mind, as they do definitely have more than a few similarities (and I don't mean that they both star Pitt, although that is undoubtedly the most obvious).
The film draws its power mainly from the bittersweet and tragic passage of time and the inevitable changes it brings to this little idyllic corner of the world. Superb final scene and quality narration as well.
Zwick didn't quite pull it off as he should have, but it is a more than worthy effort. I'm sure I'll never grow tired of it, just as I'll probably never grow tired of any good film that explores the American myth.
