Review of Legends of the Fall (1994) by Nikos B — 11 Dec 2012
In certain ways, Legends of the Fall is underrated, and in other ways it is overrated. The soundtrack, Anthony Hopkins' performance, and the cinematography are enough to give the film a somewhat positive rating.
Add to that some interesting (though vague) themes and a sweeping story, and the film becomes worthwhile. It is in the myriad attempts to make the film so majestic, however, that trouble arises. Legends of the Fall lacks focus.
Though the viewer gets an inkling that Brad Pitt is the protagonist, the movie is technically about the fall of an entire family, and as such, it gives sweet but meaningless screen time to ultimately insignificant events.
This film truly needed a film editor. Or five. The second downfall of the film is its momentary lapses into really poor dialogue. There are often strong feelings of a disconnect between the dialogue of the characters in some scenes and in others.
It prevents the audience from being able to entirely suspend disbelief, and feels a bit grating.
