Review of Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return (2014) by Greg B — 09 May 2014
"Legends of Oz" is an animated sequel to the 1939 classic, "The Wizard of Oz." In the new adventure, the Jester, the bitter brother of the newly dead Wicked Witch of the West seeks revenge against Dorothy and her eclectic friends.
The movie tries too hard to be a carbon copy of "The Wizard of Oz," and instead of paying homages, it renders itself as a carbon copy of the original movie, only it is a less competent narrative.
The character development is flat, and the movie really gives you no reason to emotionally invest in these characters. The animation is pretty and the movie is thoroughly watchable; it's just unoriginal to its very core and does absolutely nothing to break away from the formulaic approach other animated films take.
The musical numbers are interesting, but this movie was needlessly made and is an uninspired carbon copy of the 1939 classic -------------------------------------- C+.
