Review of Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return (2014) by Tom R — 24 Sep 2014
(1 Stars) I'm not against a followup to The Wizard of Oz. Heck, there have been some good continuations of the story. 1985's Return to Oz is seriously underrated. Oz: The Great and Powerful is enjoyable. But those movies felt like true sequels and Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return is something of a reboot and not a good one at that.
It's weird because they play it like it's a continuation of the first one but everything is modernized in the real world. This cannot be the same world as the 1939 version. There's Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion and they reference the first one, but... Oh my gosh, this is probably the first time this has happened... as I'm writing this, I just realized I don't remember the story. I don't remember why Dorothy even went back to Oz. I don't remember what happened to her three friends and I don't remember how it ended. I remember there's a jester played by Martin Short, but I don't remember why he was being evil. And I didn't even see it that long ago.
The music isn't really memorable. I couldn't even tell you a song title much less a melody. Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return is extremely forgettable to the point where you don't know what to talk about.
