Review of Legendary (2010) by Shawn B — 25 Jan 2011
There is a very fine line between heartwarming/corny while still being able to captivate the audience. This movie failed to do both and fell into the boring/predictable category. This was a trial to finish, clocking in at 1 hour and 47 minutes it felt like 3 hours and an unwanted chore.
In another WWE classic, John Cena attempts to tackle drama with the help of seasoned actress Patricia Clarkson who must have desperately needed the money to be in this film. This was simply bad. The script was bad and unoriginal, the acting was painful and amateur, the editing was awful and the score was the worse EVER, the music drowned the film in order to keep its sleeping bored audience awake.
I can appreciate what the film was trying to accomplish, replicating a Hallmark vibe but WWE should stick to what they know best; fake wrestling. Leave the real stuff to professionals. This film felt like the screenwriter and director sat through a bunch of inspirational stories and decided to copy every sequence it could from them; right down to the montage of blindfolded tussling, jogging and high-fives to the tune of unrelenting inspirational music.
There were some highlights of the film, actress Madeleine Martin was refreshing but after a while her character and high-pitched voice became annoying. Danny Glover, another actor I suspect was lost on the set lot and wandered into the film was underused and helped bore me death.
Just when I thought the film might be watchable leave it to the writer/director to even ruin that hope (pyro is somehow allowed in high school wrestling). Leave it to WWE to turn even high school wrestling into "Sports Entertainment".
If you're a fan of inspirational movies, don't watch this or be prepared to have everything you love about this genre ripped to pieces and stepped on.
