Review of Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen (2010) by Stan T — 14 Jun 2011
Legendary martial arts star Donnie Yen has taken over the Hong Kong cinema now that Jackie Chan and Jet Li have found success here in the US and he is certainly become their hardest working star. Yen follows the acclaimed Ip Man series with this fictionalized story featuring Chinese martial arts folk hero Chen Zhen previously embodied by Li and before him, the legendary Bruce Lee.
Yen also adds a bit of Li's Black Mask as Zhen becomes a masked freedom fighter during Japan's occupation of Shanghai. And while Legend does resemble a mix of Li's Fist of Legend and Black Mask, it is colorful and entertaining enough to let it slide as we are treated to a martial arts flick filled with intrigue, action, betrayal and heroism that is hard not to like despite it's derivative storyline.
