Review of Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen (2010) by Don S — 06 Jan 2014
It's simple. I was kicking ass.
It is 1917 and a world war is under way. China finds itself caught in the middle of working with Brittan to remain independent versus merging with Germany and Japan and becoming a super power. The Japanese has put out a death wish for 48 officials that side with Brittan and independence. The Chinese will use a martial arts expert to infiltrate the Japanese and thwart their plans.
"How much is your life worth?".
"More than your cheap suite.".
Andrew Lau, director of The Guillotines, A Beautiful Life, The Flock, Daisy, Confession of Pain, and the Infernal Affairs trilogy, delivers Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen. The storyline for this picture had a lot of potential and could have been as good as the recent Ip Man pictures...but it fell short. The acting was fairly good and the cast includes Donnie Yen, Qi Shu, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang, and Siyan Huo.
"China is the real battlefield.".
I picked up this movie because it starred my all time favorite martial artist, Donnie Yen, and this looked more like his quality films (like the Ip Man series) than his lesser films (Dragon Tiger Gate Inn) from the previews. Unfortunately, this film was very slow and scarce of action. If this had more fight scenes, and more scenes with Donnie as the super hero, this likely would have been better. I recommend skipping this.
Grade: C-.
