Review of Legend (2015) by Chris W — 10 Oct 2015

Legend is all about Tom Hardy's bravura performance as both of the Kray twins. He is sensational, producing two characters clearly sharing many attributes whilst also being incredibly distinct, without descending into parody.

Hardy oozes charisma as Ronnie, making it easy for the viewer to be swept along with the object of his affections, Frances. He also injects a surprising amount of humour as the psychopathic Reggie, adding multiple layers of complexity to a character that could have been reduced to an insane thug.

Most of the cast offer solid support, including the delicious Taron Egerton and the ever-reliable David Thewlis. Sadly the script's construct lets Legend down. We view events from Frances' point of view and unfortunately Browning's performance is too 'one-note' to make this angle truly engaging.

You're left feeling not a lot actually happened in this film, which is a shame when the central performances are so compelling.
