Review of Legend (2015) by Nick D — 29 Dec 2015
I discovered the Krays in the 2004 British TV adaptation of Jake Arnott's The Long Firm, with Mark Strong as the gay psycho Kray-inspired gangster, so I figured I'd love this, especially since both Kray twins are played by the awesome Tom Hardy, who doesn't disappoint.
Helgeland's production directs with energy and verve, and the period is delicious -- swinging London, Soho clubs, sex parties with members of Parliament and rent boys, lots of gruesome killings ---what's not to like? Chiefly, the script, which is convention piled upon cliche, we've seen it all before, or seems so, even when we haven't.
'Tis a pity.
