Review of Legend (1985) by John M — 14 Aug 2009
Difficult to buy into as an adult. It's a fairytale, and one that plunges you right in. There are fairies, goblins, unicorns and princesses. Naturally, unicorns are pure and represent goodness and, also naturally, the Lord of Darkness wants to destroy these unicorns.
It is up to Jack (Tom Cruise) to stop this from happening and save the princess he loves who has fallen into the clutches of the Lord of Darkness. If I had seen this as a kid, I wouldn't be so quick to question it.
But as a twenty-two year old male, I notice the fact that these characters are underdeveloped and not given enough back story that is necessary for you to completely delve into this mythical world. There is nothing wrong with the acting; Tim Curry totally steals the show as the evil Lord of Darkness.
The stylings of Ridley Scott also add to the aesthetically pleasing factor. There is a good movie trying to get out here, but in this age of Lord of the Rings, it doesn't quite fit the bill.
