Review of Legend (1985) by Glenn L — 13 Jan 2011
The Director's Cut enriches the material substantially, not to mention rendering the narrative far more coherent and evenly paced. The Tangerine Dream score has its sweet spots and will always retain its lucid 1980s synth charm (and I dig Jon Anderson's vocals), but the original Jerry Goldsmith treatment is one of the most beautiful, fully realized fantasy scores ever composed. The Meg Mucklebones scene is longer and better, the battle in the dungeon kitchen actually flows proper and the interplay between Lilly and Darkness is more satisfying -- just to name a few improvements. Everything is better, really.
It's definitely among my Top 5 Ridley Scott films, including Alien, Blade Runner, White Squall and Black Rain. I really wish they'd kick down a Blu-ray version, as I'm sure the sets and makeup and whatnot would marvel in high-def.
