I give it four stars for several reasons aside from having grown up with the film.

For one, the sets were all built in a large aircraft hangar that mysteriously went up in flames which resulted in them having to rebuild and reshoot midway through the film.

Tim Curry's performance as Lord Darkness was great. His voice, facial expressions and body language are seamless and overwhelming through all the makeup.

The story is an timeless one and rumor has it this film inspired the first Zelda game on Nintendo. Last I checked this film was from 1985, Zelda was released in Feb of '86.

The mood and tone of this fantasy film was different from the others of the decade. Definately darker and more adult oriented.

There was a rockin soundtrack by Tangerine Dream and the European version has a score from Jerry Goldsmith.

This story was so epic that they didn't have the technology nor the budget to do a good number of things that the writer had actually put into the story.

This film was almost too ambitious for it's time.

Sure it feels slow and sluggish at times and it's not jammed to the brim with action but it was a story worth telling and offered up some questions that most children don't ask themselves at the age I watched this film at.

What is light without dark?

Love without hate?

Good without evil?
