Review of Legend (1985) by Troy F — 26 Sep 2013
I admire Legend for its very neat dream-like, fantasy look thanks to some great art direction and sets, and Tim Curry does great and looks great as Darkness. However, the film otherwise loses its way, knowing what it wants to do but going in strange directions that really serve little else but to adhere to the conventions of these dark fantasy films we've seen many of; dark dungeons, flames and lava, etc.
It just lacks some of the magic of other fantasy flicks and takes itself a bit seriously, while attempts at humour don't really work. The highest merit I can give Legend is its visuals, and some occasionally neat battle scenes, especially the one with Tom Cruise and Tim Curry at the end.
It's a fairly okay movie overall, but something just doesn't really work with this movie. I liked it, and didn't like it. The 3 stars goes to the visuals and decent score by Jerry Goldsmith (I have yet to watch the U.
S. version with Tangerine Dream's soundtrack), while the rest is hindered by a slow pace, a confused direction with the characters, and an odd storyline that's a bit off.
