Review of Legend (1985) by Lauren P — 31 Dec 2013
"What is your favorite movie?".
"'Legend,' I say.
The response almost always prompts a confused look on the person's face.
"You mean 'The Legend' about the 18th century Chinese folk hero?".
"Not that one. I mean the fantasy tale starring Tom Cruise. Remember the obscure film that he did before 'Top Gun'?".
"Oh, t-h-a-t 'Legend.'".
Watching the panoramic beauty of this film's cinematography is the closest that we humans will come to seeing heaven-like vistas projected onto the big screen. As in 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe,' the inferences and parallels to the Garden of Eden, the fall of man, and the battle between good and evil are apparent.
Tom Cruise plays a very ultra-sensitive, Bohemian young man named Jack. Tim Curry plays the consummate Devil, a 12-foot behemoth, who is smitten by the innocence of Lily, Jack's beloved, and who tries to woo her over to the dark side. Ridley Scott's fantasy masterpiece features unicorns, sprites, trolls, fairies, water ogres, and an original Tangerine Dream soundtrack.
