Review of Legend (1985) by Brandon M — 01 Mar 2010
I will forever love this film. FOREVER.
I'm not much into science fiction fantasy films like this other than stuff such as Lord of the Rings and whatnot, but I just thought this was awesome.
This is a mid 80s fantasy film with all the bad effects as the rest, but this one's got something different. Even though the dialogue is lacking and weird, the visuals are always so gorgeous. So very light ethereal when it needs to be, and effectively evil-feeling during the Darkness scenes. The themes are simple but solid as rock: good versus evil, light versus dark.
I saw this when I had been a Tom Cruise fan for a long time, so it was really weird for me to watch him in a fantasy film, especially one as far out as this, because you just wouldn't expect him to take on a film like this, even in his early days. Mia Sara is effective as Princess Lily. But Tim Curry is awesomely EVEELLL as Darkness. The effects on his voice were really great.
