Review of Legally Blonde (2001) by Charlie S — 18 Dec 2011
Reese Witherspoon is charming as Elle Woods, a sorority girl who transfers to Harvard Law to win her boyfriend back after he dumps her. She takes Harvard by storm, strutting around in her heels, with her little rat-dog in her purse and colorful laptops and clothing. In LA, she fit right in and was college royalty, even president of her sorority. At Harvard, she sticks out like a sore thumb, and in this intellectual and snobbish environment, she is laughed at and put down by her peers. Eventually, she is inspired to prove why she deserves to be there along with everyone else.
It's a movie about believing in yourself and knowing what you can do, even when nobody around you thinks you are good enough. It's the only movie I've ever seen that actually makes sorority girls endearing and not the stereotypical super-snobs that many of them really are. Elle's friends are hilarious, especially when they giddily barge into the courtroom as if they're attending their friend's talent show instead of a murder case. Very cute and funny movie. Implausible but cute and funny nonetheless.
