Review of Left Behind (2014) by Grace K — 10 Oct 2014
I went in all excited for this movie. The 1st one with Kirk Cameron was what got me hooked into the book series. I had high expectations for it, after all, it had Nicolas Cage and Lea Thompson in it! The trailer looked cool, I just wish they had more money for some real publicity.
The story starts out bad, poor back story, they do not draw you in or build on suspense at all. I found it pretty much impossible to become emotionally attacted to anything that was going on. The "crazy" lady who confronts Buck at the airport made me cringe, and not in a good way. The acting there was terrible, but it's not so much the acting, I think the script was awful, and the actors only could do the best they could with what they had to work with. The editing lacks greatly too, so choppy. I found it very distracting. Once Cage came on scene the movie was much better. I find no fault in his acting, and he made me believe in the story once more.
The concept of the Rapture scene was impressive. I love how that was played out, don't think I've ever seen a rapture movie get it so right like this one did. Most just show the clothes after the fact, or do that camera "trick" where now-you-see-me, now-you-don't kinda thing. But this one you actually SEE it happen, and it makes you jump when it does. That was the best part of the movie, hands down. It's just too bad it was one of the only good parts in the movie.
The rest of the movie was okay, just when the actors on the plane have discussions it's very sloggy to watch. I get the feeling that the actors are good, they just need a believable script.
If Hollywood ever works up the guts to make a sequel, or even another remake, I hope they find a better scriptwriter.
Will I buy the DVD? Yes. But only because I am a die-hard fan of the books. And it is an improvement to the first Left Behind movie. I just wish they could have made it better.
