Review of Leaving Las Vegas (1995) by Devon M — 10 Apr 2010
As a contained, 2-actor showcase set around the morbid voyeuristic act of watching a character with no illusions about killing himself, Leaving is quite good; even moving. It's nice to return to a time in Nic Cage's career when he actually cared about his performances.
However, as a screenplay, Leaving follows the basic structure of a screenwriting book and its last act is especially clumsy in trying to come to its inevitable conclusion while still fulfilling the same rote ABC's of 10,000 other dramas.
