Review of Leaving Las Vegas (1995) by Richard R — 14 Jun 2013
Not as good as I remember, (I would have said five stars a week ago), but still a damn fine movie. Cage is great, and Shue is very good. Maybe it is she who isn't as good as I remember, since I remember her as also great.
I don't know why, exactly; perhaps after seeing 17 years of films with graphic portrayals of sex, violence, and self-destruction I have become less staggered by the vivid ugliness portrayed here, but I do remain very impressed.
Usually I would credit the director with such an achievement, but looking at his other work the actors, screenwriter, and cinematographer probably deserve it more.
