Review of Leaving Las Vegas (1995) by Daniel G — 18 May 2009
Cage was outstanding! Most people that play drunks are totally belligerent(and he has those moments) but Cage finds a way to give his character new layers and depth every time he's on screen. The songs they use over and over sound like stuff straight out of a bar, simple but brilliant touch.
Elizabeth Shue easily puts in her best work. The scene where she takes pride in how good she was at her job is so sad, you just know she has never seriously thought about getting out. And Mike Figgis never backing down from showing you these characters at there lowest is soul crushing.
Great movie in nearly every aspect and Cage gives an all-time performance.
