Review of Leaves of Grass (2009) by David Ray G — 09 Apr 2010
Because I hadn't seen a trailer of this movie before actually watching it, I thought, logically, that it would have something to do with Walt Whitman's glorious poetry collection titled Leaves of Grass. Boy, was I mistaken.
Because here, by leaves of grass we mean weed. Pot. Marijuana. There is of course the ever-random reference to the Whitman book right where Keri Russell is disemboweling fish, but other than that it seems as though the script didn't have a title and the filmmakers sat and thought: "don't we throw in there a Whitman line and name it Leaves of Grass?".
I'm getting obsessed over the title, obviously. For the movie itself now: I really liked the way it began. But when Edward Norton lands in Tulsa, the movie transcends into a lukewarm intelligence mockery. Edward Norton is good as both twins, but you don't really notice him because you're too busy trying to figure out the point of this movie. I was never fond of movies with marijuana, and this doesn't make me change my mind. I really thought that The Incredible Hulk would be Norton's rock bottom. I was...wrong.
