Review of Leatherheads (2008) by Al M — 04 Aug 2010
I'm not entirely sure what the critics' big problem was with this film because I thoroughly enjoyed. No, it doesn't have anything meaningful to say, but it is a well-directed, well-acted, hilarious, and cute romantic comedy that remains a hell of a lot smarter than most examples of the genre.
As the director, Clooney does an excellent job of transporting the viewer back to the 1920s and of creating a self-conscious historical comedy that pays homage to the music of the time while also incorporating the comedic stylings of Charlie Chaplin and the Keystone Cops.
Krasinski is only so-so in the film, but Clooney, Zellweger, Jonathan Pryce, the guy who played Milton in office space, and numerous other unknown actors create warm, memorable, and hilarious caricatures that make the movie fun, light- hearted, and memorable from beginning to end.
No, it has nothing important to say about the birth of football, the effects of WWI and prohibition, or anything else for that matter, but it is a fun and smart comedy that easily surpasses the bulk of garbage that is released in the genre.
Regardless of what you think of him, Clooney is a talented and capable director with the ability to bring a unique vision to the screen.
