Review of Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990) by Orlando D — 18 Aug 2011
Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III was the filmmakers attempt at returning horror back to the series after many felt Part 2 did not(since 2 was more dark humoured and gory.)and since the Nightmare on Elm Street series was slowing down, New Line thought they can turn this into a new franchise, it succeeds to a point but also that is the film's weakness as scenes were cut to avoid a then X rating so it kills whatever tension and visceral images that the director had hoped for.
Here, a young couple is traveling across country and trying to work out their relationship issues(a lot of movies had this storyline going) who run afoul to Leatherface and his murdering family. It never breaks new ground but it does have it's moments including a chase scene, a very young Viggo Mortensen and Ken Foree is an enjoyable presence who also happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Still, it could have been so much worst than the dreadful sequel The Next Generation featuring Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey.
