Review of Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990) by Al M — 08 Sep 2011
A vast improvement over the farcical and stupid TCM II, Leatherface returns to a grittier, more serious horror aesthetic that features Viggo Mortensen as the leader of the family. But the film ultimately stills feels a bit lacking in comparison to the original.
Some genuinely gruesome moments, particularly in the Unrated Version, hearken back to the franchise's roots, but it just seems to rehash the same plotline from its predecessors. While it features twisted characters and gore, the film never really manages to be very disturbing; and I personally still find the original TCM disturbing when I watch it.
Hence, while Leatherface represents an improvement over the first sequel, it still remains a disappointing entry in the series. Viggo Mortensen's character is the only memorable part.
