Review of Leap Year (2010) by Cassie H — 04 Dec 2011
Cute & adorable romantic comedy about a women traveling to Ireland to propose to her boyfriend on the 29th of February. Anna (Amy Adams) has been with her boyfriend Jeremy for 4 years & when her best friend sees him coming out of a jewelry store carrying a red bag she tells Anna thinking that he is going to propose to her.
Anna's father, Jack (John Lithgow) tells her that in Ireland it is a tradition for a women to propose to a man on leap day. She blows this off at the time because she's convinced that she's getting engaged.
Later on at dinner Jeremy gives Anna the red bag which she thinks has an engagement ring in it for her & her face is full of joy until she opens up the box & finds a pair of diamond earrings. Obviously upset, Anna goes onto the most trusted source, the internet, & looks up this grand Irish tradition.
She then decides to pack & go to Ireland, all is going well until a big storm hits & Anna is deported to Whales. She walks into a small hotel which also has a bar. She asks if anyone will drive her to Dublin & Declan (Matthew Goode), volunteers.
She tells him how she's going to use the Irish tradition to propose to her boyfriend & he gives a smug laugh & says it's the stupidest thing that he's ever heard. The car rolls into the lake, bad guys take her luggage, Declan fights them for Anna's Louis Vuitton suitcase, she misses the last train to Dublin.
Everything goes wrong. Her & Declan are taken in by an older couple who assume their married & of course only one of them sleeps in the bed. Along the line, they realize they have fallen in love with each other & when they get to Dublin & Jeremy shows up & proposes, Anna accepts it even though she is in love with Declan & he is out of her life.
She then realizes that Jeremy only proposed to her to get a good deal on a house. Safe to say that they weren't getting married. Anna goes back to Whales to find Declan & propose to him. She talks to him & tells him she doesn't want to make plans & he disappears, but only to get an engagement ring.
Anna runs off but Declan finds Anna & tells her that he wants to make plans with her. So he gets down on one knee & asks Anna to marry me. I loved this movie & I don't know why everyone on flixster who reviewed this movie hates it so much.
I love it & it doesn't deserve the bad reviews it has gotten. If you like comedy mixed in with a good dose of romance watch this movie!!! Because you won't only fall in love, you'll laugh at the clumsiness of Anna & Jeremy :).
