Review of Le Week-End (2013) by Laura M — 05 Feb 2014
About halfway through this irritatingly cynical movie I decided to allow myself to dislike it. Once I granted myself such permission, the enjoyment of hating it and its insufferable, selfish, peevish, pretentious characters did compensate somewhat for the loss of my time.
Towards the end, a new character admiringly compliments the wife on her deep connection to her own unhappiness. Perhaps we are meant to be impressed by that too, but as she and her husband seem to be the authors of their own small-minded unhappinesses (as well as inflicting them on others), the line almost made me want to laugh out loud.
What we are invited to enjoy and share in this movie, is precisely what is wrong with it. There's no real depth here, and no real laughs either. Le Merde.
