Review of Le Samouraï (1967) by Dan S — 09 Oct 2008
What a snorefest. This movie has nothing to do with Samurai, or Japan, other then the fact that slapping anything Asian was popular in France in the late 60s so this movie fit the trend. The movie is about a hitman.
..which has no relationship to Samurai...(a samurai is not a lone wolf...that is a Ronin, which while related, is not the same thing, Ronin came about after the fall of the Shoguns and Once Samurai found themselves out of work and master) The quote from Bushido at the begging of the film was taken completely out of context.
The rest of this film is a rather typical 1950s film nior movie...which had been done in Hollywood a million times before this film was released. Honestly the only redeeming qualities of this film were its rather lovely soundtrack and the cinematography (which was excellent).
However these two elements are not enough to save this film...which is obviously held in a higher regard then it should be solely based on the fact that it's "french minimalism".
