Review of Le Samouraï (1967) by Dave C — 04 Mar 2009
Subtle, quiet, and elegant. Three words that accurately describe both a samurai, and Le Samoura¯, a wonderful crime film from Jean-Pierre Melville.
The hype surrounding this film was presented to me as the genesis of coolness in crime films. This hype couldn't be more correct. Alain Delon plays Jef Costello, easily one of the coolest on-screen anti-heroes ever. He's a man of few words, and a man of even fewer emotions. He just completely captivates with his presence, it's impossible for words to do him justice.
This is an absolutely remarkably photographed movie. As black and white as a color film could ever be. The use of shadows here is second-to-none. It's bleak and beautiful.
I can say no more. This film is just too damn awesome.
