Review of Le Samouraï (1967) by Christopher L — 22 May 2009
It may just be me, but I really enjoy the sort of silent observer position for the viewer. It's nice because it help you get into the mind of this cold lead character, so expertly played by Alain Delon-- a hit man who stands aloof from the world, expert in what he does, with his own code of honor. It's a character concept that's been done and redone and even done to death, but when it's done well it's absolutely amazing, and this is one of those instances.
Alain Delon gives a great performance almost entirely with his face and his body. His face is profoundly interesting to watch from moment to moment, which is strange given the fact that he seems so emotionless in the film. In reality, when you watch closely, Delon is portraying a profound spectrum of emotions beneath a verse stolid exterior.
Caty Rosier also gives a great performance with face, body, and her few short lines. She is marvelous to watch while she plays the piano, and her last line in the film is beautiful and beautifully delivered.
"Por quoi, Jef?".
