Review of Le Samouraï (1967) by Augusto A — 13 Jul 2009
Brilliant in every way, flawless in every technical aspect. Dialogue is kept to a minimum, but the audience is never kept in the dark more than it absolutely has to be about either plot developments or character motivations and emotions.
A perfect example of the classic "show, don't tell" screenwriting golden rule, Melville's domain of film language is incredible and everything you need to know is told through visual means.
Minimalist and precise, every frame is beautiful. I'm already pretty late in my discovery of Melville, but now I really feel I need to check out more of his work. I might be caught up in the moment when I say this, but he could become a new favorite filmmaker of mine.
I hope I don't end up disappointed with his other films.
