Review of Le Samouraï (1967) by Sam C — 16 Feb 2008
One of the most complex movies I've ever seen, but it's extremely powerful. I had to watch the scenes a couple of times through in order to understand what went on, and I still don't really get it.
That being said, however, this film, especially considering when it was made, is close to a masterpiece. The scenery was dark and created an extremely haunting, powerful ambience that combined the elements of American Gangster Films and Kurosawa Samurai movies.
The nature of the character Alain Delon created was truly one of a kind and cannot be done more than once. At this point, I'm still taking everything in, still thinking about every moment of the film.
It was extremely well put together and I can't wait to see more by Jean-Pierre Melville.
