Review of Le Samouraï (1967) by Jef C — 10 Feb 2012
The most perfect film I ever laid eyes on. There is not a wasted shot, gesture, or word. Alain Delon gives a performance so incredible it's really quite difficult to properly qualify. Never have I seen an actor disappear so entirely into a role (DDL in TWBB, perhaps).
Melville and Pellegrin's screenplay is without peer, a tragic, meticulously detailed piece of existentialist fiction concerning an ascetic hitman and the significance of his fate. Style and substance in equal measure.
Oh and by the way it's the coolest shit I've ever seen. Cooler than anything I'd ever imagined I'd see. Cooler than anything that came before it, and anything that's come since.
