Review of Le Mans (1971) by Dean M — 07 Mar 2013
The world's most famous rev-head racing in the world's most famous endurance race - count us in. On paper Le Mans was a cracking idea: Hollywood's hottest star, fresh from The Thomas Crown Affair, showing off his Bullitt trained driving skills in a pseudo-documentary style travelogue of the epic French road race.
The execution, however, is similar to watching... well, cars driving around in circles for 24 hours. As a snapshot of a filmmaking era it still fascinates and McQueen is always easy on the eye but the longeurs of the race can't be outrun.
Gentlemen, switch off your engines.
