Review of Le Havre (2011) by Dasen P — 12 Apr 2012
I have to say I am still a sucker for Kaurismaki. There is something about the detached style of direction and acting that I love. It's not that humans are really this quirky, but this is more of a truth than the usual round of depictions (a bit like Mike Leigh or David Lynch at their best).
Moving the action to France for this film has made him less Scandinavian in some ways, but his colour palate stays beautifully aquamarine and hyperreal throughout. There's something decent about all of the main protagonists, and there is a happy ending.
.. with an homage to Casablanca thrown in for good measure. And Jean-Pierre Leaud, the fresh faced boy of 400 Blows makes a cameo (I nearly didn't recognise him).
