Review of Le Divorce (2003) by Lea C — 12 Jan 2008
Unusual effort from director Ivory, the film suffered from a very misleading advertising campaign. Instead of a frothy French farce, it's instead a rather dark and pessimistic story about lost love, deception, and the conflict between sex/romance and money/greed.
Watts gives a strong performance, with Hudson giving her role the appropriate moments of light comedy required. Fantastic supporting cast includes standout performances by Sam Waterston and Stockard Channing as the parents of the two women, and a wonderful turn by Leslie Caron, still wonderful after all these years.
The film contains some twists and turns, not all of them entirely necessary, but combination of a strong cast and character developments overcome the weaknesses.
