Review of Le Cercle Rouge (1970) by Chris W — 27 Nov 2007
When I first saw this years ago I found it rather boring and hadn't seen any of Melville's other work. Revisiting it after Le Samourai and Bob le Flambeur made me realize Melville as the master stylist and storyteller that he was.
It's the caper film that isn't about the big heist and fast dealings in-between, rather an examination of three men doomed from the get-go and they just don't know it yet. John Woo may consider Melville to be God, but I'm hoping to God that Woo doesn't actually go through with his planned remake.
There's a fine line between paying tribute and committing hubris.
