Review of Le Cercle Rouge (1970) by Noel K — 21 Feb 2009
Caught at a recent screening at Cinema City in Norwich, I hadn't seen this film since my film student days in the nineties and it hadn't lost any of its charms over me. Uber stylish and er, very French, Mellville's heist film is a pure joy. Couldn't help noticing when watching John Woo's The Killer on TV how much Chow Yun Fat's (Woo has often cited Mellville's crime films as a huge influence ) central character reminded me of Alain Delon's gentleman thief in Le Cercle Rouge. A little dated perhaps, but you can see its influence on all of modern crime films from Tarantino to Oceans 11.
Id like to point out that the film was released in 1973 and not 2003 as Flickster states. Also I hear a remake by Jonnie To is underway.
