Review of Le Cercle Rouge (1970) by Mikey M — 02 Sep 2009
Moody French heist movie with little dialogue. Made in 1970 (not 2003 as flixster suggests), it is full of superb visual story and cool characters. There is an early shot of a train window with a continuity cut to a helicopter shot of the same window that is disguised by a clever sound and expectancy technique - A moment that quite simply took my breath away.
However, some lazy jump cuts to drop expendable action later frustrated me considering the evident visual story telling skills of the filmmaker. Never-the-less this film follows firmly in the footsteps of the earlier Rififi and though not quite as involving, it certainly warrants the keen eye of any budding filmmaker.
