Review of Lazer Team (2016) by Liam D — 01 Feb 2016
As a rooster teeth fan, I really wanted this to be good but it was from start to finish, terrible. they have repeatedly stated that they want this to pull in a new, non-rooster teeth audience but that's not going to happen. this is not good by any standard; it's bad as a low budget indie. it's bad as an indie dudebro comedy. it's bad as a sci-fi parody. the directing is bad, the jokes are weak, the story is feeble.
One of the worst things to me is actually the music. I don't think rooster teeth are really interested in music compared to movies and video games, and iirc they made a big deal out of getting enough funding to hire an orchestra to do the soundtrack. but an orchestra doesn't fit the tone of this movie - it's a scrappy underdog comedy that, if it were good, would play best to like, a college crowd? the music should be fun and funny, ideally to me, upbeat lesser known indie rap that would punch up the action. an orchestra on a movie this scale is overbearing, an orchestra playing uninspired, disconnected themes that do nothing to improve the movie is just sad. even more sad when I think about the comparatively simple but far more interesting/emotionally impactful work trocadero and jeff williams have done for rvb and rwby.
Other than that my main complaints are that the romantic subplot was deeply unnecessary, and gavin free's acting was dog shit. like i'm sorry, it was fucking awful and I can't imagine it being compelling to anyone who isn't aware of him through achievement hunter. gavin is noticeably talented at the other stuff he's worked on, but he is a painfully bad actor. michael jones was surprisingly good; he might have just playing a punched up shittier version of himself, but at least it was exciting. burnie would probably have done better in a movie with better writing and directing, and colton and alan will hopefully get better work in the future.
