Review of Layer Cake (2004) by Lee B — 01 Oct 2010
3.15 stars. The movie that would launch Daniel Craig as the next James Bond, "Layer Cake" is a taught and intense film about the life of drug manufacturer who wants to go straight. Not to be outdone Colm Meaney, (the transporter guy from StarTrek TNG) gives one of his best performances as his connection and a mid-grade enforcer.
Vaughn does a great job directing the film with clever and smart camera work, but for most Americans I'd recommend viewing this film with the subtitles on as the dialog sometimes sounds mumbled, -but it's really because they are speaking in true English.
There are some really good bits in here despite the subject matter and the sometimes intense level of violence,- it's just that to Americans British gangsters don't feel scary, but "Layer Cake" makes a genuine run at legitimacy with its intricate rules and clever sub-plots.
