Review of Layer Cake (2004) by Jason J — 09 Oct 2010
Layer Cake is a stylish, clever, funny and all round entertaining crime thriller which is a very hard genre to pull off properly, but director Matthew Vaughn pulled it off to perfection. This was the perfect mixture of wit, intelligence, violence and drama.
Daniel Craig turns in a particularly convincing performance as the nameless protagonist lead. Michael Gambon, Colm Meaney, and George Harris also deserve special mention. The script moves smoothly and understandably while always holding your attention.
Layer Cake has an interesting plot that keeps the viewer wondering where everything will lead and particularly enjoyable dialogue full of memorable and humorous lines. The film also has a sharp look and a cool soundtrack, giving it plenty of verve and flare.
Well worth having a look.
