Review of Layer Cake (2004) by Mari A — 14 Nov 2010
Matthew Vaughn's films are as cool and stylish as Guy Ritchie's work and as visceral as any Tarantino movie. This is not to say that Vaughn does not have a style of his own, what I'm implying is that he is showing that he can do as good and sometimes better than recognized and critically acclaimed directors.
"Layer Cake" is an intricate portrait of a drug dealer with a conscience. The film begins with great dynamism and even when the plot complicates to the point that I almost felt lost, I didn't feel bored.
At the end everything is solved and explained, so the viewer will not feel betrayed (Yeah! This is for you, Ritchie's "Revolver"!). The movie is daring and in that way it is unpredictable and a great cinema experience.
Matthew Vaughn is on a streak, I hope he keeps his work as good as this and "Kick-Ass".
